Hope Translator’s screen overlay works with vMix the same way it works with ProPresenter and OBS: paste a translation display link into a browser layer, then composite that layer over your program. Teams that already switch cameras and stream in vMix can show live captions on the house screen and the livestream without extra hardware.
vMix runs on Windows. Hope Translator’s host session (browser or mobile app) can run on the same PC or on a separate device that feeds the room mic into Hope Translator.
What is Screen Overlay?
Screen overlay displays live transcription and translation text on top of your video or slides. In vMix, that means a Web Browser input on an Overlay channel (1–4) so captions stay above whatever is on program—cameras, graphics, or NDI feeds—while your audience sees one unified picture.
Getting Your Screen Overlay Link from Hope Translator
1. Click 'Add Screen'
Log into your Hope Translator account
Open the Presentation and Streaming Software section
Click Add Screen to create a new overlay
2. Enter Your Screen Name
Give the overlay a clear name (e.g., "vMix Program Translation")
3. Configure Your Display Settings
Background color: Keep this fully transparent (default) so vMix can composite captions over video. An opaque page background will cover the entire frame
Text color: Choose high-contrast colors for camera and slides
Vertical / horizontal alignment and margins: Place captions where you want them (often lower third)
Text background color: Optional bar behind the words; use the color picker’s alpha so the bar does not block important content
Important: Background color and text background color each include their own alpha (transparency) in the color picker. RGB and alpha are independent. If you pick a solid color but leave alpha fully opaque, the overlay can cover the whole program picture in vMix.
4. Save Your Configuration
Review the preview
Click Save
5. Pick a Language and Copy the Link
Select the target language
Copy the screen overlay URL
Paste it into vMix using the steps below
vMix Integration Using a Web Browser Input
vMix’s Web Browser input (Chromium / CEF) can load Hope Translator’s overlay URL and preserve transparency when used as an overlay.
Add the Browser Input
In vMix, click Add Input
Open the Web Browser tab
Paste the Hope Translator overlay URL into URL
Set Width and Height to your production canvas (for example 1920 × 1080 for 1080p, or 3840 × 2160 for UHD). Matching resolution keeps Hope Translator’s layout aligned with your output
Name the input clearly (for example, "Hope Translator – Spanish")
Click OK
Visual tip: Hope Translator’s overlay is a full-frame transparent page. Caption placement is controlled in Hope Translator (alignment and margins), not by shrinking the Web Browser input. Keep Width and Height at full output resolution unless you have a deliberate reason to scale it.
Put Captions Over Program
Under the Web Browser input, click one of the numbered Overlay buttons (1–4) to place captions on top of program
With a transparent Hope Translator background, vMix should show only the caption text. Chroma key is usually not required
Prefer adjusting placement in Hope Translator first. Use Input Settings → Position only if you need a small nudge in vMix
Optional test: append ?text=hello (or ?text=your test text) to the overlay URL to verify sample text, then remove the query before going live
Multiple Languages
Create one Web Browser input per language (each overlay URL includes its language)
Preflight each language before the service or event
Keep unused language inputs loaded but off Overlay so they stay connected
Advanced Configuration
Performance Optimization
Prefer Ethernet on the vMix PC
Close apps you do not need so CPU and GPU stay free for encoding and the browser input
Confirm captions on the real program / recording / stream output, not only the input preview
Practice recovery: refresh the Web Browser input or toggle the Overlay channel mid-event
Audio for Hope Translator
Hope Translator needs a clean voice feed in the host session. vMix mixes cameras and stream audio separately:
Route the same voice you use for the room or stream into Hope Translator (mixer channel, interface, or loopback as needed)
Do not rely on the Web Browser input’s page audio for translation—the overlay page is display-only; transcription runs in your Hope Translator host session
If the Hope Translator host runs on a Mac, browsers often only expose system audio channels 1–2—route voice-only to those channels when capturing on that machine
Visual Customization
Match brand colors and contrast for stage and livestream
Prefer a light text bar or text outline when captions sit over busy video
Size text for both sanctuary distance and phone livestream viewers
Integration with Other Presentation Software
Hope Translator’s overlay URL works anywhere you can load a web page as a layer:
Watch program out, not only the browser input tile
Keep the vMix PC online so the overlay page can update
Leave the Web Browser input running; toggle Overlay on/off instead of deleting the input between segments when possible
Common Troubleshooting
Captions Don't Appear
Open the overlay URL in Chrome or Edge and confirm text appears when Hope Translator is live
Append ?text=hello to test layout with sample text
Confirm the vMix PC has internet access
Confirm an Overlay channel (1–4) is active on program
Rebuild the Web Browser input at the correct Width Ă— Height if text looks cropped or missing
Captions Cover the Whole Picture
In Hope Translator, set background color alpha fully transparent so the page does not paint an opaque full-frame fill
Check text background color alpha if a solid bar is larger than you expect
Avoid forcing an opaque page background with custom CSS on the vMix Web Browser input
Caption Delay
Optimize the Hope Translator host’s audio and network path
Reduce other load on the vMix PC
Refresh the Web Browser input if the page looks stale while the host still updates
Display or Freezing Issues
Refresh the Web Browser input, or briefly toggle the Overlay channel
Check CPU/GPU load—heavy encoding can stall the browser engine
Delete and re-add the Web Browser input with the same URL if the page stays blank
If the Hope Translator host still updates but vMix is frozen, the issue is local to the browser input
Initial Text Delay
A short delay after activating Overlay is normal while the page connects. Load the Web Browser input in rehearsal, turn Overlay on before you need captions, and avoid repeatedly destroying and recreating the input during the event.

Getting Started
Start with a free trial, create a screen overlay with a transparent background, and add it as a Web Browser input at your canvas resolution. If you use ProPresenter for slides and vMix as the switcher, you can run the overlay in either tool—or feed slides into vMix and keep captions only in vMix.
Hope Translator + vMix gives you open captions on program and stream without a separate caption box. Create a transparent overlay link, add it as a full-resolution Web Browser input, place it on Overlay 1–4, and rehearse refresh / toggle recovery before you go live.
